Exit Festival 2011 - review

There is so much on offer for even the most casual of listeners at Exit Festival, and we would definitely recommend that you make the trip given the chance. Indeed, We've witnessed the stuff of dreams this weekend and Serbia has been the ideal setting (while the weather has been sweltering - maybe we're just too British, eh?). We can't wait to come back again and experience Exit's great atmosphere and admire their diverse choice of performers. 2012 is going to be a lot of fun, we can assure you! Exit Festival 2010 - review

Truly an incredible place, Exit Festival was created in 2000 as the “State of Exit” by three Novi Sad students as a protest against the brutal Milosevic regime. There is a wonderful atmosphere of freedom and multiculturalism, against the backdrop of the many nationalities, cultures and languages amongst the attendees. The music reflects the diversity of the festival’s attendants, as major bands from a wide variety of European countries are invited to play.

Exit Festival has such an international, diversified atmosphere,it gives the opportunity to meet a wide variety of different people and listen to music you can’t really get at the average English festival. On the other hand, it’s still your general messy, dance-til-dawn five-day party. Moreover, the acts at Exit Festival only start playing after 8pm, so don’t expect to get to sleep before sunrise.

A complete eclectic mix, from punk to hardcore, reggae and dance to salsa and indie. There are around 20 stages, with the hub of the festival taking place at the main stage and in the dance arena. The dance arena is particularly overwhelming, a huge sweeping stadium, at its best when the sun’s rising at 5am and you’re high on life and dancing, jammed next to thousands of other equally euphoric people.

Unlike a lot of British festivals, only about a quarter of those who go to Exit Festival actually stay in the campsite, the majority opt to stay in hostels or rent apartments from local people in town. It’s just too hot and noisy during the day and after a hard Exit Festival night and early morning you really do need some battery recharging!!

EXIT Festival crowd

Going into Novi Sad itself for food is a lot cheaper and nicer than the fodder served up in the campsite and the arena. It gives you an opportunity to sample traditional Serbian dishes, and to visit the beautiful man made beach that sits on the banks of the Danube river, where many festival goers spend the day sleeping off their hangovers.
With regard to alcohol, you’re best buying along the side of the road, as Novi Sad locals make full use of the influx of foreigners by selling cheap (potentially bootleg) liquor all along the mile or so of pavement leading from the campsite to the arena. Alcohol is generally good value for money; a very large bottle of vodka will cost you around 4 quid. The vendors are also generally keen to give you free shots of eye watering Rakia, a traditional Balkan spirit & watch your faces & you sup this completely alien liquid.

The festival has around 200 cold showers units, absolutely essential in the blistering 30 -35 degree Serbian heat. The toilets, sadly, are the basic festival portaloos, worsened by the heat.
The beer - “To Borg” or not “To Borg”
The food provided hmmmm…. when you see what you can get just a few minutes walk into town it’s worth doing your eating before hand.

Exit is for seasoned festival goers who wish to have a seriously good time in a new and exciting environment. As it’s all the way in Serbia, it’s definitely the perfect excuse to explore Eastern Europe while you’re there. Many previous Exit Festival revellers advocate Budapest as a vibrant, student friendly city, but Zagreb in Croatia, Sarajevo in Bosnia and Belgrade in Serbia itself all come highly recommended as places to culturally and socially enrich yourself on the cheap.

BUDAPEST HUNGARY

Budget Airlines like Easy Jet, Wizzair and Jet2 all fly direct to BUDAPEST, HUNGARY  (it's a popular route with many visitors taking  a look round Budapest before or after Exit Festival).
It is cheap by comparison and is a top destination for these airlines.
You can also travel with one stop off with Lufthansa, Swiss Air, KLM, Air France or Malev (the Hungarian airline) which are not much cheaper but are classier airlines and may be the solution if the other airlines are booked up.

Budapest is 200 miles from Novi Sad and there is a border crossing which can be a bit of a nightmare. There is a 5.5 hr minibus transfer - direct from the airport to Novi Sad or the journey time can be considerably longer if you go by coach. There are also trains three times a day from Budapest to Novi Sad. There is a regular shuttle service from Budapest airport to the train station.

BELGRADE SERBIA

This is the main and closest Exit Festival Airport destination.
Budget airlines Wizzair are flying direct this year but during the fest week they are not as cheap as neighboring European destinations.
British Airways and JAT (Serbian Airline) are the main carriers from the UK but flying direct is expensive. A cheaper way to Belgrade is by using other European airlines with a stop over in Germany or Switzerland then onto Belgrade. There is generally a couple of hours wait at interlinking airports

One stop off (en-route) will get you to Belgrade a lot cheaper.
European Airbuses Nikki and German Wings are doing good rates as well as companies using Swiss Lufthansa KLM Adria & Aerosvit.
Belgrade is only 50 miles from Novi Sad: the closest to Exit Festival about Ihr 15mins by road.
Or alternatively you can take the shuttle to Belgrade City if you want to spend some time in the Capital & then catch a train or a country bus to Novi Sad (cost around a fiver)

TIMISOARA ROMANIA

Wizzair are running flights direct there at discounted prices however other airlines are far more expensive
There is a daily bus to Belgrade which takes around 3-4 hours
You can also book a private transfer.
110 miles from Exit Fest – 5 hours transfer by road or 3 hours by train

ZAGREB CROATIA

National Croatia airlines fly direct or it's one stop with Easy Jet German Wings, Malev or Lufthansa.
240 miles from the Exit Festival - 6 hours transfer by road with a straightforward border crossing

SOFIA BULGARIA

Easy Jet, BA, Bulgarian Airlines, FlyThomasCook.com (Charter) Fly direct
This is the cheapest we have found this year
200 miles from Exit Festival  – BUT ONLY TRAVEL OPTION – Train 8 hr journey. Not a regular pick up point for Exit Festival goers

OSIJEK CROATIA

Ryan Air are offering flights to Osijek Airport. Probably the cheapest flight travel to the fest. A very small airport close to the Serbian border
None of the flights are direct. Fly to Frankfurt, Germany and then on to Osijek, just 80 miles from Novi Sad and EXIT Festival.
The flights are less frequent and normally arrive and depart on a Wednesday & Sunday so you should plan a weeks stay for the festival.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Generally bookings and flight details for this route are not announced until sometime in March so you cannot book now!

LJUBLJANA SLOVENIA

Easyjet, Adria & Austrian Airlines
Not many people fly this route unless they are traveling along the coast beforehand. It is relatively cheap but the drawback is the distance from Exit Festival.
300 miles– it's 8-9 hours transfer by road with 2 border crossing! to get through! Or 9.5hrs by train straight to Belgrade

What are the choices for airport transfers?

Exit Connect are now taking bookings for airport transfers for 2012 Festival.
We offer a transfer services using small vehicles (8-19 seaters) - alternatively there are cheaper coach services. Although our services cost more we recommend them for the following reasons:

Mainline Coaches have known to take 10-12 hours to get to their destination instead of the 6 hours the journey is supposeed to take. This is mainly due to the border crossing procedure for larger vehicles which can have long delays because of the above average movement of transport due to Exit Festival. Additionally they are only available at fixed flight arrivals serviced by the Budget Airlines.

Being smaller we can be far more flexible on times and cover more flights which means far less hanging around time!

We only arrange private transfers with smaller vehicles which has these benefits:
A 19 seater is 3 times quicker to load and unload because it is much easier to gather 18 passengers than 54 passengers.
A smaller vehicle is much quicker through border crossings customs and passport control.
Also our smaller vehicles deliver and collect door to door so passengers do not need to worry about getting to rendezvous points or missing their ride.

Last year our Budapest 7-8 seaters sailed through border crossing leaving the coach companies queuing.
From Belgrade we use a regular taxi company that ensures you are whisked away to your destination without waiting around.
While it is true that our prices are higher than the coach companies we feel the advantages and benefits of our service in terms of speed of transfer and shorter journey times outweigh the additional costs. In short - We prefer to get everyone to their destinations in the shortest time possible and quickly

OTHER WAYS TO GET TO EXIT

Coaches Direct From The UK

No operator has succeeded in organizing coach trips direct to the fest. Over the years this has been tried but with few takers & was scrapped in 2010.The underlying problem was too long a haul to actually get there & then partying for 4 days & the long trek back to the UK. Price wise it also proved uneconomical.
With that in mind if it is still an option you would like to pursue then this year a new operator MUSIC FESTIVAL HOLIDAYS www.musicfestivalholidays.co.uk are organizing coach trips to Exit Festival direct from the UK

Drive Direct

Standard size car 4 sharing £160 each includes 2 nights accom en route both ways. Check the festival tips page for more information on driving.
